It’s really simple to build your own leather frame cover for your Brompton. You need some leather, a sharp cutter knife and a hole punch.
The leather shouldn’t be too thick – 0.8 mm is fine. To cover the top frame tube you need a piece of leather 14.5 cm wide. The length depends on your personal taste – it’s 18.5 cm what you see here.
- use a sharp cutter knife to cut the leather to the size you need. Easy to do with a soft piece of leather
- mark where you will cut out the holes. It is important to be precise here, otherwise your work will not look neat when you pull the leather ribbon through. Leave enough material between the holes and the border of your leather piece. 0.3 to 0.5 mm should be fine
- cut the holes with a hole punch. The size of the holes should fit to your ribbon – less is more
- now you are ready to mount your new frame protector
There is no magic behind this handiwork and your new accessory protects your frame from scratches and it’s less slippery when carried. I like it.
